fishing skill:
all you need to get started is a fishing pole and at least 200 fishing skill to maximise your catch rate. you do not need to win the competition, just catch a lot of fish to increase your chance of catching a rare fish. ie level your fishing to  at least 150 then attach lures, baits ect to get to 200+

fishing pole:
there are a few vendors that sell a (limited quantity)strong fishing pole (+5 fishing skill) and / or regularily in the ah. plus you can pick up a +2 to fishing skill enchant on your gloves from an enchanter. buy an aquadynamic fish attractor +100 fishing skill - if possible.

tournament
shortly after the server clock hits 14:00 (2:00 pm) every sunday, a /yell will be broadcast accross stranglethorn vale indicating that the fishing tournament has begun. another yell will be sent when the contest has been won by someone and a third and final yell will be sent at 16:00 (4pm) letting you know that the fish schools are gone and that you have one hour to turn in  your fish at booty bay.

schools of tastyfish:
as soon as the tournament begins, the nodes of tastyfish will spawn all along the coast of stranglethorn vale, except for  booty bay  and juergo isle they will  look like small whirlpools, 2-3 yards in diameter and are visible from a good distance as a noticeable spot in the water. the locations of the nodes are fixed, you will find that there are spawn locations approximately every 100-200 yards or so along the coast. each node only has a limited number of fish and will despawn when empty, so be prepared to move fast to the next. multiple people can fish each node so dont be too worried, it just means they will fish out faster. the schools will remain up until 4pm, even after the competition has been won.

how to catch the rare fish you  need:
in order to catch the rare fish, you must cast your bobber inside one of the fishing nodes or at least partially touching the edge of the school.  if you miss, re-cast again until you get as close to the center as possible - there is no way to guarantee that your bobber will land in the right place and it can be frustrating, but when you do try and remember how far from the school you were to assit on the next one. you are looking to catch the following:-

keefer's angelfish:
lucky fishing hat +15 stm
can only be turned in from 14:00-17:00 (2pm-5pm) on sunday's

brownell's blue striped racer:
nat pagle's extreme anglin' boots boots  +12 stm
can only be turned in from 14:00-17:00 (2pm-5pm) on sunday's

if you are catching tastyfish your are fishing the right spots!
watch out for
there are a lot of high level mobs along the stv coast obviously, particularily on the southwest side which have naga (these swim out quite far). the east coast of stranglethorn, by comparison, is much easier for low levels, but if at all possible take a high level along to deal with any aggro as you cannot fish whilst in battle, never mind the fact that most things will get you dead fast.

there is no xp for turning the fish in for the rewards at the fishbot 5000
